Course Descriptions

 

Beginning Band

This course is designed for students who are new to instrumental music and eager to explore the world of band performance. Through hands-on instruction and ensemble rehearsals, students will learn the fundamentals of playing wind or percussion instruments. Emphasis will be placed on proper technique, note reading, rhythm, and ensemble playing. Students will have the opportunity to perform in concerts and develop their musical skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.

 

Intermediate Band

Building upon the skills acquired in Beginning Band, this course is designed for students who have a basic proficiency on their instrument and are ready to further develop their musical abilities. Students will continue to refine their technique, expand their repertoire, and deepen their understanding of music theory and ensemble performance. Through rehearsals and performances, students will work collaboratively to achieve musical excellence and expressiveness while exploring a diverse range of musical styles.

 

Advanced Band

This course is intended for highly motivated and dedicated musicians who demonstrate proficiency on their instrument and a strong commitment to musical excellence. Students will engage in rigorous rehearsals and intensive study of advanced repertoire, focusing on refining technical skills, musical interpretation, and ensemble cohesion. Through performances, competitions, and solo opportunities, students will demonstrate mastery of their instrument and develop leadership skills within the ensemble.

 

Marching Band and Color Guard

Marching Band and Color Guard combine musical performance with precision movement and visual expression. In this course, students will learn intricate marching routines, choreographed dance movements (for color guard), and perform music while marching. Through rigorous rehearsals and performances at football games, parades, and competitions, students will develop teamwork, discipline, and showmanship, while fostering school spirit and community pride.


Jazz Band

This course offers students the opportunity to explore the rich tradition of jazz music through ensemble performance. Students will learn improvisation, swing rhythm, and jazz harmony while studying a diverse repertoire of jazz standards and contemporary compositions. Through rehearsals and performances, students will develop their improvisational skills, ensemble playing, and stylistic versatility, exploring various jazz genres such as swing, blues, Latin, and funk. This course encourages creativity, individual expression, and a deep appreciation for the art of jazz.

Winter Guard
This course takes place during the spring semester and offers students the opportunity to explore the art of performance through choreographed movement, equipment work, and expressive visual storytelling. Combining elements of dance, theater, and precision with the use of flags, rifles, sabres, and props, students will learn routines designed for indoor competition. Through focused rehearsals and performances, Winter Guard members will develop strength, coordination, musical interpretation, and ensemble cohesion. Auditions begin at the end of November, and while it is highly encouraged, participation in the fall Color Guard is not required. Students will be part of a dynamic and supportive team that values creativity, dedication, and teamwork.

Dance

This course is designed for students interested in exploring movement, rhythm, and expression through a variety of dance styles. Students will learn fundamental dance techniques, choreography, and performance skills in a supportive and energetic environment. Emphasis will be placed on body awareness, musicality, coordination, and creative expression. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to perform in one major showcase each semester, as well as at school rallies and special events. The course encourages collaboration, confidence, and a passion for the performing arts while fostering school spirit and community involvement.
